We often treat our minds like the hard drives of a modern computer. When we realize a piece of information is wrong—when we learn that a tomato is actually a fruit or that heavy objects don’t actually fall faster than light ones—we imagine ourselves simply dragging that old “file” into the mental trash bin and clicking “empty.” We assume that once we have achieved Conceptual Change, the old, incorrect “naive” model is deleted, replaced by a shiny, new scientific one.

According to researchers, we don’t actually delete our past mistakes; we just learn to silence them. These old misconceptions remain in our minds as “ghosts in the machine,” waiting for the right moment to flicker back to life.

The Persistence of the Naive Model

From our earliest days, we act as “little scientists,” constructing mental models to explain the world. These initial frameworks, often called naive models, are built on our daily perceptions. For instance, a child’s naive model of the Earth is almost always that it is flat and stable because that is what their eyes tell them.

According to the Information Processing (IP) Model, we interpret all new data through the lens of this prior knowledge. When a teacher introduces the concept of a spherical Earth, the child doesn’t immediately “reformat” their brain. Instead, they often engage in accretion or enrichment, trying to stretch their old “flat” model to accommodate the new “round” fact. This leads to what researchers Vosniadou & Brewer (1992) call synthetic models—like imagining the Earth as a pancake that is circular but still flat on top.

True learning requires restructuring, a large-scale, non-monotonic change of our internal schemata. This process is slow, difficult, and remarkably infrequent because it requires us to fundamentally rebuild our internal architecture.

The Expert’s Paradox: Why Knowledge Takes Time

One might assume that once someone becomes an expert—say, a physicist or a biologist—those early, incorrect naive models are finally gone. But behavioral and neurophysiological evidence tells a different story.

In a series of fascinating studies, researchers found that experts actually take longer to solve certain problems than beginners do when those problems involve concepts they once had misconceptions about. If the old knowledge were truly deleted, the experts should be lightning-fast. Instead, they hit a mental speed bump.

The “ghost” is activated automatically by the mere presence of the stimulus. The reason experts take longer to respond is that they must use inhibitory connections to “dampen” that old, incorrect node so that the valid scientific model can win the race to their conscious awareness.

Interference: The Tug-of-War in the Mind
